Case Three:

Mr Pierce Michaels:

I wait for Melissa to leave then press my buzzer.

‘Yes, speaking?’

I know exactly who it is; I can see him on the camera.

‘It’s Mr Pierce Michaels.’

‘Hello, please come up, the door will be open upstairs.’

My tone is flat, unemotional, with no sign of my usual calm coaxing manner. He takes longer than the expected few minutes, I guess he’s chatting with Melissa, or she’s desperately trying to avert his gaze as she passes him on the stairs. I stay poised at my desk. My verbal treatment with him will be frosty and straight to the point. I don’t care if I lose him as a client. In fact, I might even cancel him today. A rattle of impatience blows through my breath as heat plummets into my chest, making me feel angry. My legs tense up with the impending confrontation.

I try to relax, by breathing deeply and take control of myself. Professionalism is key here, no stray snippets of emotion for Mr Michaels. A weakness I never show, however in my angst, openings can occur and he might extract none verbal information from my body language. I look at my door, which is now unlatched and ajar. I hear footsteps; the door opens further. I turn my head his way, he clears his throat. He looks dashing and immediately calms my flustered altered state.

‘Hello, Mr Michaels, please take a seat.’

I would usually use first names. Not today, he doesn’t deserve any warmth from me.

‘Thank you, Sophia.’

I watch him take his long strides to the sofa near my desk. I turn toward his direction, by turning my chair, so I can face him. He sits down with a confident thud, pulls his jacket lapels out and loosens his tie. He hasn’t looked me in the eyes yet. He’s definitely being shady. I notice how his arrogance adds to his charm and air of presence, however, I will not let this sway me into speaking in a soft warm manner.

‘Mr Michaels, before we can begin…If we begin today, I want to speak with you about a different matter altogether.’

He faces me and smiles with understanding. He knows exactly what I’m talking about.

‘This is no smiling matter, Mr Michaels.’

‘I thought we were on first names, Sophia?’

‘Not at this present moment…Maybe, after you’ve explained yourself.’

‘I see…And how can I do that?’

I sit forward, with a serious expression swept over my face. I pucker my lips and hunch my shoulders a little.

‘Mr Michaels, let’s cut to the chase…You’ve been asking questions about me and my practices, you’ve even spoken with my friend in the beauty therapy clinic. You’ve also been asking a client of mine about my approach to work and how she feels about me…You have put her in an awkward and embarrassing situation, of which I am very unhappy with. Can you explain yourself and tell me why you are, let’s say, questioning my competence?’

He fiddles with his tie; I can tell he wasn’t expecting such a direct approach from me.
